Vande Bharat Express, operated by Indian Railways, is a medium-distance superfast express service. Launched on 15 February 2019, this reserved, air-conditioned chair car service connects cities less than 800 km apart or within a travel time of ten hours. The trainsets, designed and manufactured by Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, are self-propelling Electric Multiple Units (EMU) with eight or sixteen coaches.
During trials, the trainsets achieved semi-high speeds of 183 km/h (114 mph), although the maximum operational speed is limited to 160 km/h (99 mph). This speed is matched by the Rani Kamalapati (Habibganj)–Hazrat Nizamuddin Vande Bharat Express and Hazrat Nizamuddin-Khajuraho Vande Bharat Express on the Tughlakabad–Agra section. Along with Gatiman Express, these trains are the fastest on the Indian rail network, excluding local RapidX services.
A standout feature of the Vande Bharat Express is its rapid acceleration and deceleration capabilities. The second version, Vande Bharat 2.0, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 52 seconds, outperforming some bullet trains during its initial trials.
